Sweet Potato Pie Essay
Sometimes being the oldest or the youngest sibling in your family doesn’t matter. I feel this way because they’re the same, but they have different responsibilities. You may think the youngest has life the easiest, but no they don’t since they have to live up to their older siblings standards or higher. They get pressured about being like their older sibling. You may think being the oldest has life the easiest, but no they don’t either. They have to set high standards and follow them. Parents may want their kids to go to the same college they went to, so I feel being the oldest or youngest sibling in your family doesn’t matter. In the story “Sweet Potato Pie” by Eugenia Collier, Buddy’s success can be contributed to Charles’s guidance. Buddy will always be grateful to his older brother for this guidance.
Buddy is a success because of his brother Charley. Earlier before Buddy graduates high school, he started to form a stutter problem. Someone that Charley knows told him how to stop someone who stutters by slapping the stutter across the mouth with a soaking rag. “I don’t know when or why I stopped stuttering, but I just did”. The narrator wrote that Buddy has a stuttering problem and Charleys’ friend was right about the stuttering cure. This quote shows that Buddy stop stuttering after all. If you want to become a successful person in life you can’t have a stuttering problem, because people won’t be able to understand you clearly. Buddy is a success today because Charley helped him with his stuttering problem. After Charley helped cure Buddy’s stuttering problem, his father told him that he’s smart and intelligent and not to depend on his good looks to be a success, then Charley tells Buddy that he will be somebody. “You ain gon be no poor farmer, Buddy”. Charley and his father know they are poor, since Buddy is smart and intelligent and he loves school he is going to become someone successful in life. This quote shows his family cares about him succeeding in life. Charley and his father don’t want Buddy to be poor like them. Buddy is successful because of his family being support for him and lelling him know that he has the ability to be somebody important.
Buddy is grateful for what Charley did. Little before his sister Alberta went north to find work and his baby sister died at the age of twelve. During the graduation, Buddy Says his speech about his family and how he was standing there that day all because of what his father and Charley said to him. “And Charley, on the end of the row still somehow the protector of them all.” Like I said in the beginning of my essay, Charley is like the mother and father to all his siblings. This quote shows that without Charley and his father telling Buddy to do something that’s going to make an impact in his life, so he wouldn’t of ended up like Charley driving a smelly old dirty cab. They don’t want him to end up like that, so this is all about Buddy becoming a successful person. Without Charley and his dad’s help he would have been some poor farmer boy. They didn’t want that for Buddy because he has the knowledge to be a success in life. Buddy’s success can be altrinbuted to Charley’s guidance, and Buddy will always be grateful to his older brother for his guidance back then. “Charley still long, and lean, still gentle eyed, my greatest fan, and still determined to keep me on the ball”. Buddy’s thanking Charley for a lot, because without him he wouldn’t be on the stage going his speech about who encourage him to want to be a success when he gets out of high school. This is quote shows no matter what your going through, family will always be there for you to help you when you need it. If his family didn’t push him, he would here been just like them or even worse. So, this is how Buddy shows he’s grateful for what Charley did for him and this made him a successful person.
Charley wanted all his siblings to become a success when grow up older especially Buddy, since he’s the only one at home now. When family shows they believe in you they tell you, your going to become a success, you take the encouragement and run with it because they may not say it again. This shows they really care about you, like Charley and his father cared about Buddy. Life is not easy for kids unless they hear somebody in their family tell them they can do it. Take this advice and grab it by the horns and ride, doing your thing to become a success. You will be more of successful person, because of his family supporting and loving him. Charley and his dad made that happen, because it’s called taking care of your family and making sure they are important and successful in the world when they get older and wiser.
